Summer Makeup Bases | Protect Your Face From The Sun

Summer Makeup Bases SPF Shiseido Smashbox Nars

The bright sun has finally cast its presence upon us in Toronto! With the sun at full force, SPF is a key ingredient to look out for in your summer makeup bases, like moisturizers, foundations and powders. In the warmer months, I opt for a BB Cream versus a foundation for a lighter coverage. I also like to crank up the SPF in my moisturizer for more protection.

My Top 3 Picks For Summer Makeup Bases

1. SHISEIDO Ultimate Sun Protection Cream+ Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ For Face

Although SPF is important to have all-year round, in the summer I tend to favour a moisturizer with a high SPF. Right now I’m trying out the Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream+ Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ For Face. I received a deluxe sample size of this with my recent order from Sephora. So far I am enjoying this moisturizer to use underneath makeup because it isn’t as greasy as your traditional sunscreen and I also haven’t been burned by the sun yet using it — which is always a plus, of course!

2. SMASHBOX Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35

In the summer, I tend to switch out my foundation for a BB cream. I like the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream because it has an SPF of 35 and also provides great coverage. It does feel a little sticky on the skin, but I find the staying power to be great — a tradeoff that I’m willing to make! The colour range for this BB cream is excellent as well (I wear the shade Light/Medium).

3. NARS Powder Foundation SPF 12

Even though this claims to be a powder foundation, I find that the coverage is a bit too light for my liking. I use the NARS Powder Foundation as a setting powder all year round and I’ve recently hit pan on it :( This is the best powder I have ever used (thank you Weebs for recommending it to me!) I find that it doesn’t make me look cakey and it is the most natural looking powder that I have tried. Although it has an SPF of 12, I have never experienced flashback in photos that I have taken when wearing it.

Another reason why I like this powder is because I was able to find a great colour match for my skin tone (I use the shade Punjab). I find that the powders tend to run a bit darker than the foundations, so if you use NARS Sheer Glow, keep that in mind when choosing a colour (in NARS Sheer Glow, I wear the shade Stromboli).

Where To Purchase?

I purchased all of these products from Sephora, but you can also purchase these products from department stores that carry Shiseido, Smashbox or NARS products. If you try out any of these products, please let me know in the comments below, or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram! :)

    Oh good, I’m on the constant hunt for a good sunscreen for my mom…because she has bestowed me with that task -_-
    I do remember trying out Shiseido’s and really liking it, BUT WHY ARE ALL THE GOOD SUNSCREENS EXPENSIVE? ;-;

    For sunscreen, I usually just stick to my BB creams with SPF. So lazy. :D

      You are so right! The good sunscreens are expensive :( I tried a Neutrogena one once and it didn’t make me break out, but it made the texture of my skin really bumpy. :s BB creams are a life safer! This Smashbox one is my go-to errday base, lol :)
